James Robert "Bert" Langford, Jr.

On August 4, 2023, James Robert "Bert" Langford, Jr. finally lost his battle to cancer and passed peacefully at his home in Tallassee, Alabama. Bert was 61 years old.

Bert grew up in Montgomery, Alabama, and was a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School Class of 1980. He attended Auburn University at Montgomery and he was a die-hard Tigers fan. He was an avid reader with an eclectic choice of titles and subjects which fed his unquenchable thirst for knowledge.

Even in his early years, Bert had a deep love for his country which led him to join the U. S. Navy where he served his nation and traveled to many ports around the world. He was always ready and willing to share a story about his Navy experiences and ports-of-call he had visited.

Bert possessed an eternal love for the outdoors, finding great solace and joy from his time spent in nature. Boating, fishing and hunting were always at the foremost of Bert's plans.

His passion for boating led Bert in his later years to earn a 100-ton vessel commercial captain's license. This was an arduous and complex process which required multiple courses to reach his level of certification. Unfortunately, fate would prevent Bert from ever realizing his dream of piloting one of these huge ships.

Bert is survived by his mother, Donna Marietta; stepfather, Tom Gannaway; father, James "Jimmy" Langford; stepmother, Joann Chrietzberg-Langford; sister, Susan "Suebeth" Langford-Jordan (Bobby Jordan); aunt, Beth Marietta Lyons (Jimmy Lyons); nephew, Nigel Guntharp (Haley Guntharp) and daughter, Sara Brumble.

The family would like to recognize Bert's friend, caregiver and special angel, Brenda McAlpin. Her selfless devotion to Bert's well-being can never be repaid. Thank you, Brenda, we love you.

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2023 from 4 to 6 pm in the Thornton Room at Linville Memorial Funeral Home. A close family friend, Robert Thornhill, will provide prayer and song.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be memorial contributions to American Cancer Society.
