Narcie Nadine Lumpkin Sanders went to be with our Lord on Friday, September 15, 2017, after complications during hip surgery.
Nadine, lovingly called Deanie by family and friends, was born September 25, 1932 in Tallassee, Alabama. She grew up farming and helping her family through the Great Depression and playing in a band with her siblings. They performed weekly on a local radio show. Nadine would sing and play the guitar. She married Harry Samuel Sanders in April of 1953 and they started a life together in Opelika, Alabama. Nadine spent her years raising her two children and working as a seamstress. She loved creating clothes and home furnishings for her friends and family members and had a successful business doing just that. She designed home items and custom clothing for the public. She loved her sweet Tea Cup Poodles, which she had many of throughout her life and was a breeder as well. She spent many years as a caretaker to elderly ladies in her neighborhood, lovingly caring for them in their years of need. Like most Grandmothers, Nadine’s cooking was unmatched. She would basically force you to eat when you entered her home, making up the most delicious fried chicken, vegetable soup and a life changing Banana Pudding. It is no surprise that her signature dish was a pudding, as Nadine never met a dessert she didn't like.
Nadine was a devoted and beloved grandmother of three and great grandmother of nine. Called Nanny by her adoring Grands, she was doting and attentive and loving, exhibiting the patience of a saint when her home was filled with energetic, loud and excitable kids. Nanny loved a good yard sale and would wake up early to get there on those select Saturday mornings. She could find all the good things and negotiate like a pro. Her loss is felt deeply and the void she leaves in our family will never be filled. But we know that people of strong spirit pass over and become strong spirits in Heaven. She lived a life devoted to serving God, being active in her church and sticking to her values.
Funeral service will be Sunday, September 17, at 2 pm at Linville Memorial Funeral Home with Rev. Eugene Dixon and Rev. Bill Perryman officiating. Pallbearers will be Donnie Lumpkin, Jonathan Lumpkin, Campbell Jernigan, Taylor Jernigan, Allen Sanders and Jeff Sanders. Burial will follow at Grier Cemetery, Linville Memorial Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be at the funeral home prior to the service, beginning at 12:30 pm.
Nadine is preceded in death and now reunited with her mom and dad, David Luther and Katie Lee Lumpkin and siblings, Dawson Lumpkin, Wilmer Lumpkin, John Lumpkin and Gracie Cosby. She is survived by her adoring husband of 64 years Harry Samuel Sanders, two children, David Sanders (Mary) and Kathy Sanders Preskitt (Mike), three grandchildren, Allen Sanders (Sierra), Liz Sanders Harrison (Ryan) and Amber Preskitt Jernigan (Taylor); and nine great grandchildren, Campbell Jernigan, Eli Jernigan, Zoe Sanders, Eliana Sanders, Lily Harrison, Ava Grace Schremser, Gabby Harrison, Sophia Jernigan, and Addie Harrison.
